Free to Play is an Interactive video game performance, written and directed by Cole Schubert, where audience members get the chance to take control of the characters and ‘play’ the show for themselves.
Set in a nuclear launch shelter where the only thing that matters is stimulation, you’ll get the chance to help one man save the world or die trying.
I created the “game” for this project in Unity and Ink, which was a choose your own adventure game. We had to make sure the game was responsive to the performance as well though. Our solution we came up with was having me backstage during the performance, advancing the game dynamically with a Bluetooth keyboard.
Generally it was a huge learning experience because we were doing something none of us had ever done before, and it was fascinating thinking about how to integrate a game and the semblance of choice and agency into a theatrical experience.
